Step Into Our
Outport Story
Built in 2000 for the internationally broadcast Random Passage mini-series (based on the novels by Bernice Morgan), the village you’ll explore now serves as a living interpretation of early-19th-century outport life in coastal Newfoundland.
Standing on this headland—once the outport of White Point—you’re walking through a place where fiction meets carefully researched history. Rather than representing one specific town, the Random Passage site presents the fictional outport of Cape Random, featuring a composite of houses, a church, fishing stages, flakes, and work yards arranged as they would have been along the coast.
The site is maintained and interpreted by Cape Random Trust so that visitors can connect, first-hand, with the people, practices, and coastal landscapes that shaped Newfoundland.
How Your Visit Works
Start at the Schoolhouse: Purchase tickets, pick up a map, and get oriented in our beautifully restored one-room schoolhouse—also home to the Licensed Tearoom and gift shop featuring local crafts.
Walk to the Village: It’s about 10 minutes along a gravel road from the schoolhouse to the historic site. Stroll at your own pace or join a guided tour on arrival.
Return via the coast (optional): On the way back, follow the Georges Cove coastal trail for sweeping views and a sense of the paths that early settlers once took to church and school.
Tearoom & Shop

Warm soup, fresh bread, simple bakes, tea and coffee—plus an incredible selection of locally made gifts. Check the board for daily offerings and new menu items.
Plan Ahead

Trails and surfaces are gravel/grass with some uneven ground; sturdy footwear and layers are recommended. Weather can change quickly.
