Our

Story

On the edge of the Bonavista Peninsula, Cape Random Trust welcomes visitors to step into the story of Newfoundland’s past.

Our core mandate is to promote and preserve the cultural heritage of the region through education, interpretation, and community engagement. This includes developing programs for schools, welcoming tourists and local visitors, coordinating site upkeep, hosting cultural events, and stewarding the surrounding trails and landscape.

Behind the scenes, Cape Random Trust is a registered Canadian charity that plays a broader advocacy role in support of rural sustainability and cultural tourism. Through our work, we hope to ensure that Newfoundland and Labrador’s unique outport history is not only remembered but actively experienced by future generations.

The Inspiration

As the custodians of the Cape Random site, the Trust is responsible for maintaining and operating this unique cultural attraction—a historically inspired 19th-century outport village originally built as the filming location for the Random Passage television series, based on the acclaimed novel written by Bernice Morgan.

Book & Television Series

Published in 1992, Morgan’s book Random Passage has stood the test of time as a national bestseller and a cultural pillar of outport Newfoundland art and history. The sequel, Waiting for Time, published in 1994, not only continues the stories of the Cape Random residents, but engages with the relationship modern-day Newfoundland has with our history, family legacies, and heritage preservation.
